Acne In Adults : Don’t Be Embarrassed

Acne is for teenagers, right? Wrong! A common misconception is that acne only affects teenagers. The truth is that many adults struggle with acne even though they didn’t have acne as a teenager or may have had only a very mild case. This is typically known as Adult Onset Acne. For many other adults, their teenage acne has unfortunately followed them into their adulthood.
Although adults are usually better equipped to handle the physical, psychological and social effects of acne, it can be just as devastating to those afflicted. And current numbers are indicating that adult acne is increasing with no known attributing reason.
Regardless of the age of first acne outbreak, the physical and psychological impact can be long-lasting and cause problems with you appearance. According to Dermatologists, adult acne is more likely to leave scars because of the age of the skin in adults. Much of that is attributed to the lose of collagen which helps the skin bounce back and not leave scars. The physical scars aren’t the only scars left by adult acne.
Psychological scarring can be much harder to deal with and is often a result of the sufferers own inaction. While adults have better coping mechanisms to deal with acne, they are often less likely to seek treatment due to the embarrassment of having something that is supposed to affect teenagers not adults. While this isn’t true, it is still a very common misconception among adults. This can result in a cyclical pattern of inaction followed by continued scarring and more embarrassment leading to continued inaction.
The good news is that as time goes on and more and more adults are recognizing that acne is not just for teenagers and does require treatment to eliminate it.
Over-the-counter acne treatments and prescription medication sales have increased during that time frame also. Although inconclusive, it does suggest that adults with acne are seeking relief more often than before. It could also indicate that the number of cases is also on the rise as is expected.

Doctors and dermatologists are working on understanding the special causes and unique effects that adult acne has on older patients. With continued public awareness and a population becoming more likely to seek treatment, having a more thorough understanding of the affects of adult acne and proposed treatments will be demanded.
Today, more and more information about adult acne is being captured which will only further help identify the causes and help treat those afflicted with adult onset acne. A new emphasis is being placed on the psychological effects of adult acne because of the social emphasis that is being placed on having clear skin. Of course, understanding the physical causes of acne is foremost because if you can cure the acne outbreaks then the social and psychological issues will usually take care of themselves.
