Blue Light Acne Treatment Facts

Acne Vulgaris is the most common skin disorder.

While this disorder is not threatening to your life, it does cause damage the self-esteem of the afflicted.

Because of the rise in outbreaks worldwide that are related to this condition, the variety of treatment options have increased tremendously.

Furthermore, skin care professionals have become specialised in specific areas of dermatology. There are medical practitioners who emphasise not only curing acne, but getting rid of acne scars using cosmetic surgery.

One of the newest methods in cosmetic dermatology is blue light acne treatment, or photo dynamic therapy.

The way it works is first, the patient will be placed in front of the blue light for between fifteen to thirty minutes, once a week. This treatment will continue for somewhere between 3 to 8 weeks, depending upon your specific acne condition. The blue light operates on a special wavelength that is said to effectively eliminate the bacterias that cause acne.

A topical cream called Levulan may also be applied in tandem with blue light therapy.

This cream will often cause your skin to become pink and crusty, however, it is said to be very effective when it comes to getting rid of acne and scars.

Blue light therapy has been around since the 1970s but as an acne treatment it is a recent addition to cosmetic dermatology practice.

Blue Light Acne Treatment Benefits

To be upfront about it, the long term effects or possible side effects of this treatment are not yet fully known.

However, there are many immediate advantages to this form of skin therapy.

This type of treatment is a great first option over other methods that do have known negative side effects.

Antibiotics are commonly prescribed to fight acne but long-term use can cause patients to become resistant to antibiotics in general, putting them at risk of infection.

Accutane is another acne medication which can cause severe depression, suicidal idealization, and birth defects.

Women of child-bearing age using Accutane must have monthly pregnancy tests.

If you are against popping pills or spreading acne creams on your face everyday, then you should strongly consider blue light treatment as an alternative method to get rid of your acne condition.

If you have tried several other types of treatment for your skin condition that simply haven’t worked, blue light acne treatment is an excellent option for you to explore.

It is a great choice for acne suffers who find themselves resistant to topical creams or antibiotics.

The last good point of is that you can now purchase a blue light acne treatment set that can be used at home.

Due to it’s inexpensive cost, those who have the condition of acne can treat themselves in the privacy of their own homes.

It is still not known if the home treatment is as effective as the clinical treatment.

Have You Tried Tea Tree Oil For Acne?

April 24, 2009 by Joelle Atifah

The Melaleuca Alternifolia plant produces a chemical called terpinen-4-ol which is the main ingredient that gives tea tree oil it’s antimicrobial benefits. It has been used for thousands of year as an antiseptic.

Leaves and twigs of the paper-bark tree are steamed in large stills to produce the essential oil. It is used in many products for skin care and acne problems. Many reviews on the Internet recommend this oil for mild to moderate acne.

Tea tree oil has been shown that it can hinder and destroy microbes. It is speculated that because it can kill bacteria, it may help reduce acne by destroying Propionibacterium acnes, a bacteria that is associated with acne. This bacteria is very common and is usually not a problem. It’s when the pores of the skin get plugged up with excess oils, that P.acnes can inflame the skin causing acne to form.

If you use a product that contains alpha hydroxy lotion, it might help stop dead skin cells from plugging follicles openings. This could be applied in the mornings and a tea tree oil product could be used in the evenings just before bedtime. This tactic attempts to treat two of the main factors attributed to acne.

Tea tree oil products often have a very distinct smell. The major component of tea tree oil is a natural terpene. The word “terpene” comes from word turpentine which what the smell reminds me of.  Other people have said it has that “camphor” smell to it. I have read a ton of people complain that their family members or partners don’t like it.

If you buy pure tea tree oil, it should be diluted if your using it for acne. It is too strong and can cause skin irritation. It should also be tested on the inner arm before applying it anywhere on the face or neck to make sure your not allergic to it. I use a teaspoon of tea tree oil diluted in 3 ounces of water for my acne wash. Don’t dilute it too much though because it won’t be effective on P.acne.

  • Some people can have allergic reactions to some of these products.
  • Safety should be your first concern.
  • Keep this stuff away from pets and children.
  • It is toxic if swallowed!

If your using any OTC product including tea tree oil for acne, and it is not helping, the best thing you can do is see a dermatologist as soon as possible.

Don’t keep trying every new product that comes along.  Chronic acne left untreated properly, can lead to scarring and sometimes even affect a person mental state.

There are different kinds of acne and they require different types of treatment.

Using the wrong product or using it improperly can make acne worse.

In fact, I would not recommend using any topical treatment (including tea tree oil) before consulting a certified dermatologist.

Laser Treatment for Acne Scars

April 20, 2009 by Mary Boline

by Mary Boline

For people who suffer from acne scars, we tend to daydream or envision that day when we will have smooth skin. While others save for holidays, acne sufferers save for that day when they can be rid of acne scars from a dermatologist. People with acne tend to have a bit of distortion in how others perceive them, because they themselves see their face first thing each morning and can never forget this unsightly version of themselves.

Discovering the right procedure for our skin, one that we can afford, is paramount for those with acne scars. Figuring out the best option is necessary. Finding out that there are financing and payment plans available make the idea of smooth skin a possibility and reality.

Laser surgery: This is expensive but good. The scar tissue is removed by a skin surgeon, resulting in smoother, clear skin. The development of future skin scars from acne is low. Depending on your pain threshold, the level is from low to medium for most patients, though males tend to have a lower pain tolerance than females overall.

Fractional resurfacing is a laser treatment that results in about 60 percent improvement of acne scars after two or three treatments. There are minimal side effects with this type and is safe to use on other areas of your skin including neck, chest, hands. It is recommended that the treatments be repeated over intervals of three to five weeks, and to also repeat the procedure from 3 to 5 times. Every four weeks for four treatments total seems to be the norm.

Laser fractional resurfacing provides ultimately that smooth skin you have been longing for. If you want wrinkles addressed, you can have those smoothed out as well, or brown spots can be removed.

There are differences between fractural lasering and non-ablative laser treatments, and those variations you can discuss thoroughly with your dermatologist. Ultimatly the deciding factor may be the price for you. Fractural lasering can cost from 1500.00 per treatment to 2500.00 per treatment. They can also discuss with you non-ablative laser which costs from about 300.00 to 1300.00 per treatment.

Is it worth it? Well, make an appointment, look at before and after photos, discuss the pros and cons and decide for yourself. I believe you will do whatever you can to be rid of acne scars after you have had your first discussion with a dermatologist.

One last thing, for those of you who use Accutane, talk to your dermatologist ahead of time about that, as s/he will likely not use laser surgery for at least six months after you have stopped using it.

Adult Acne

February 2, 2009 by Paul Mahon

by Richard May

Around 25% of men and 50% of women are going to suffer from adult acne at some stages in their adult lives. Today it is not only teenagers but also people in their twenties, thirties and forties that are likely to suffer from this skin condition as well. Certainly, teenagers often find this difficult to cope with, but also just as many adults are finding it hard to cope with acne as well.

As you can see from the figures we have mentioned above this form of acne is more common than one could have first imagined. However, what is actually causing it is still unknown, but the main cause is thought to be hormonal changes that have taken place in the adult’s body. Therefore, as soon as you think you may have this skin condition it is important that you seek medical advice as soon as possible.

But as well as hormonal changes taking place in the person’s body there are other reasons why they may have started to suffer from adult acne also. Below we take a look at just what some of the reasons are.

1. One of the other main reasons why an adult has begun to suffer from adult acne is that their diet is extremely poor. They are found to be eating all the wrong kinds of foods and their diet contains too much fat, carbohydrates and sugar in it. This then results in their body actually not getting sufficient amounts of nutrients to help it to function correctly. In many cases their digestive system begins to function poorly and the hormones inside them become unbalanced.

But as well as eating foods which have high levels of fat and sugar in them they also prefer to eat a lot of processed (ready prepared and pre-packaged) foods as well. So if you want to ensure that you do not suffer from this skin condition as you grow older it is an idea to make changes to your diet and begins to eat more fresh (organic where possible) foods. Plus increase your water intake to as much as eight glasses each day and this will further help to eliminate unwanted toxins from the body.

2. If you do have a well balanced diet then you may well have adult acne because you have inherited. Unfortunately if not treated swiftly enough this condition can become much more severe and lead to scarring.

3. Another reason for why some adults may get this skin condition is because they are using synthetically made makeup and skin care products. These products are causing the acid and alkaline levels in their skin to become unbalanced and results in the eruption of the spots associated with acne. So the best way to avoid such skin problems if you use such products regularly is by only using those made with natural ingredients in them.

In the article we have shown you a few of the reasons as to what may be the cause for your adult acne problem. But just like teenagers you can use the same kinds of products that they do in order to treat the condition. Also along with using these it is advisable to make some changes to your dietary habits and to use only skin products, which contain natural ingredients.
